The 'Homerun Method'

We use a three-base system to help players take the fastest path "home" — real, usable Japanese for on and off the field.

  1. Guided Classroom Instruction

    Customized Curriculum

    Classroom learning held remotely or on clubhouse days. Sessions are led by accredited instructors using a textbook and curriculum written specifically for MLB/NPB, with English and Spanish tracks depending on the player’s background. Session length is tailored to each client’s scheduling needs and decided together on a case-by-case basis. Vocabulary is reinforced through our asynchronous learning app, built for spaced repetition.

  2. Conversational Immersion

    Japanese-only conversation practice led by everyday native speakers, trained by our team — giving players exposure to real, lived-in Japanese, not just “classroom Japanese.” Each player gets 30 minutes of one-on-one practice per session.

  3. Asynchronous Learning

    Customized, Self-Paced

    All learning lives in one app — textbook, flashcards, and real-world audio and video, from game and hero interview clips to everyday conversations. 15–30 minutes per day recommended.

Our Curriculum

Our program is built on task-based learning, an approach that teaches language through the real situations players will actually face, rather than isolated grammar drills. We teach to specific scenarios, giving players the vocabulary and grammar to navigate them with confidence.

The curriculum spans thirty chapters — the average number of games played by MLB teams in recent spring training seasons — each built around situations a player might encounter in Japan. “On the Field” chapters cover talking with teammates, understanding coaching instructions, and navigating media obligations. In “Off the Field” chapters, focus shifts to everyday life: grocery shopping, asking for directions, ordering at a restaurant. Every chapter also includes cultural notes, giving players important professional context alongside the language itself. As players build a foundation, scenarios grow more complex, layering new vocabulary and grammar onto what they’ve already learned.

We also know that spring training and season schedules don’t leave room for a rigid, front-to-back curriculum. That’s why the textbook is designed to work both ways: players with more time can progress chapter by chapter, while those on a tighter schedule can reference individual chapters as situations come up, no need to start from page one.

Every chapter was developed in consultation with former overseas players who lived this transition firsthand, alongside Japanese language teaching experts, to address the specific challenges of playing professional baseball in a new language and culture.

Program Types
In-person, hybrid, and remote formats are all available, with materials and instruction offered in English and Spanish. We work with full teams for spring training bootcamps during clubhouse days (our thirty-chapter curriculum is specifically designed with this in mind), and with individual players or baseball professionals looking to pick up, maintain, or sharpen their Japanese. Either way, the program is built around you.
For Non-Players
LingWaBase is always growing. For scouts, agents, journalists, and other baseball professionals, we design “Extra Inning” chapters: career-specific material that fills gaps our base curriculum doesn’t currently cover.
Pricing & Timeline
Program fees depend on the number of learners and sessions, as well as the instructional mode. Every verified inquiry receives a program pitch, quote, and video consultation within 2 business days. Individual programs can begin as soon as one week after payment. Team inquiries, as well as custom-made Extra Inning chapters, typically require 1–3 months of lead time for instructor recruitment, onboarding, and curriculum design.
